On the weekend of June 8-9 Mohegan Sun celebrated the opening of the newly renovated Mohegan Sun CC with a star studded celebrity event. On Friday Ahmad Rashad joined regional and national media to play the restyled layout and to announce the return of the Ahmad Rashad Celebrity Golf Classic in late July.

On Saturday, Mohegan Sun opened the course to its casino patrons who shared the fairways with the likes of Jason Varitek, Tim Wakefield and others as part of a grand opening event that marked the opening of the Club following a year and half long overhaul of every corner of the course and the clubhouse.

The work has been an effort to freshen the look and strategy of the course while solving some inherent functional and agronomic issues. The project included the construction of 68 newly styled bunkers, new greens, surrounds and approaches, new tee complexes increased in scale and varied in angle, newly routed holes embracing the broad reaching elevations on the property, a complete cart path system, 3 lakes with automatic water transfer, extensive drainage and a state of the art Toro irrigation system.

The project is a successful exercise in creative storm water management and environmental stewardship; reducing the maintained area on the course by 10 acres while capturing a majority of the rainfall into the lakes for irrigation use.

Ayers Brook which runs through and along the 4th, 5th and 6th holes was rebuilt with the creeks aesthetics and strategic meandering restored to improve function. The new lake at the 6th hole was structured to provide skimming opportunities during heavy rains resolving historic flooding issues along an adjacent road system. The Club is also beginning the renovation of the Clubhouse. A grand re-opening of the facility is planned for Spring of 2012.
