Water Management Plan leads to Major Renovation at Mohegan Sun Country Club

Robert McNeil is working with the Mohegan Sun Tribal Council on the major redesign of Mohegan Sun Country

Construction is underway at Mohegan Sun Country Club in Baltic, Connecticut. In August, NMP Golf Construction, GCBAA, based out of Montreal, Canada, began the execution of an extensive golf course enhancement plan developed by Robert McNeil, ASGCA Associate and Principal Golf Course Architect at The Northeast Golf Company.

The impetus of the project was the development of a comprehensive water management plan. Elements of the plan included the design of 3 large holding ponds within the existing routing of the course maximizing on site storage capacity, a surface flow capturing plan and a skimming structure to utilize excess flows during flood periods. The project also includes the restoration of Ayers Brook, a heavily eroded stream running through portions of the property.

The planning process began in 2007 and evolved into 5 new holes, 70 new bunkers, new tees and greens, extensive drainage and a new state of the art irrigation system design by Joe Sarkisian.

The course has been closed for the duration of the renovation work and will reopen in 2012 for the play of its members and patrons of the nearby Mohegan Sun Casino.
