The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same
Robert McNeil Guides Transformation at Sterling Farms

A relationship and long range master plan hatched in 1998 has fostered change of the golf facility and property at Sterling Farms.  Robert McNeil, ASGCA Associate and Principal Golf Course Architect at the Northeast Golf Company has been guiding the enhancement and renovation from its conception more than 10 years ago.

“Our relationship with Robert McNeil works.  He understands our goals, works within our guidelines and budgets and ultimately creates a first class product our customers and we are proud of, “said Paul Grillo, Executive Director, Stamford, Connecticut Golf Authority.

McNeil and Grillo have overseen the mission and checking off suggested improvements since the project began. The recently concluded phase four of the multi-year capital improvement plan marks yet another milestone.  The latest changes include a complete redesign of holes #11 and #12. The new tee boxes at the par-4 #11 have added 50 yards to its length.

The quality of the course has developed dramatically over the years with a new short game practice and teaching area, all new bunkering, as well as new tees and greens on holes 1-9.  A re-contoured synthetic turf practice range finished this March is a welcome addition that upgrades the locale and makes it more challenging.  Additionally, the main entrance to Sterling Farms Golf Course has received a fresh face with new lighting, stonewalls and extensive landscaping.

“The long range master plan developed for the golf course and property emphasizes the uniqueness of Sterling Farms which lies in the diverse nature of the amenities available to the public. Beyond the golf course, impeccably maintained by golf course superintendent Tracey Holliday, the site offers a first class tennis facility, restaurant, sports grille and theater,” said Robert McNeil.

The practice center is very popular.  At times the wait for an open station is up to 1½ hours.  It has been expanded as part of the long-range plan and now accommodates 50 players within its 2-tier heated teeing structure.  The latest phase of upgrades included reshaping the target field to present players with a more receptive area to hit to and improved ball containment.  Extensive drainage has also been installed to capture water for reuse in the irrigation system.

Phase five will bring more enhancements. Scheduled to begin in the fall it will incorporate redesign on holes 10 and 14 through 18.  The project incorporating the overall scope of the master plan is slated for completion in 2011.

The perennially rated #1 public course in Fairfield County does 55,000 to 60,000 rounds each year.   It’s been a golfing favorite and that’s not likely to change.
